Nicola's first race for Aspire

Last year, Nicola, who has a spinal injury, was using a heavy NHS wheelchair that was awkward to use and stopped her getting out and about independently. But, when she approached Aspire’s Human Needs Fund, we were able to help Nicola purchase a lightweight wheelchair that is perfect for her and allows her to get on with her life.

Nicola was so taken with her new-found independence that she started looking around for a challenge that would harness her fitness interests. The Aspire Fundraising Team were happy to help out and Nicola decided to tackle the Bupa London 10,000 challenge and raise funds for Aspire in the process.

On the day, racers were met with unseasonal rain and wind. But that didn’t stop Nicola, who was the only wheelchair athlete taking part in the race, from having a great time:

Aspire helped me when I was in need, so I was really happy to be able to help them too. That NHS Wheelchair was really difficult to get around whereas the one from Aspire is simply brilliant! The fact I was able to take part in a 10km challenge just shows what difference the chair has made to my life.

I might have got soaked on the day but I don’t think I stopped smiling at any point. And, with money still to come in, I’ve already raised £1,245 for Aspire. I can’t help but think that this was just the start though – I like a challenge and I’m already thinking about taking on the London Marathon next year.

If you’d like to follow Nicola’s example and set yourself a challenge, have a look and see what we have available now.
