This year’s Aspire D-Day Ride Out saw 120 bikes taking part, many with pillion riders, to travel from Folkestone to Le Touquet in France to raise money for Aspire.

You may have seen us mentioned or quoted in a number of newspapers last week as we spoke out about the assisted suicide storyline in Emmerdale.  We expressed our disappointment at the Producer’s decision to go down this route with character Jackson Walsh instead of showing how life with a spinal cord injury can still be fulfilling.

Last night’s Emmerdale episode saw us bid farewell to popular spinal cord injured character Jackson Walsh, played by Marc Silcock, as his assisted suicide attempt proved successful.

It is no secret that Aspire has been outspoken on this topic since we first had an inkling of where the storyline was heading.

Teamwork, gutsy determination and 192 energy bars all played their part in an amazing 233 mile cycle ride that has helped raise over £20,000 for Aspire and the Variety Club.

Instructability is a joint initiative from Aspire and YMCA Fitness Industry Training (YMCAfit), which proactively supports and trains those with disabilities to hopefully secure employment in the fitness and leisure sectors.

Vodafone and JustGiving have launched a new service called Just Text Giving, which was launched on Monday 9th May. The service allows people, on any phone network, to donate up to £10 to their chosen charity by using a unique code.

Aspire is looking for volunteers to carry out surveys in Stoke Mandeville and Salisbury spinal centres around care; finding out what works well for people with spinal injuries and what needs improving.

The annual London Marathon is taking place this Sunday, 17th April, and Aspire is delighted to have 17 runners and 2 wheelchair racers taking part. They will be pounding the streets of London and burning some rubber to raise much-needed funds for Aspire as well as raising awareness of the vital work that the charity does in supporting people with spinal cord injuries from injury to independence.

Aspire launched its 20th house on Friday 1st April in association with Guinness South, a member of the Guinness Partnership. The Aspire House in Islington will give people with spinal injuries the opportunity to enjoy fully accessible accommodation while their long term housing solution is being arranged. The house was officially launched by local MP and Shadow Health and Social Care Minister, Emily Thornberry.
