Brian Carlin - Triathlete
Basking in the sun. Having a barbeque. Watching England crash out the World Cup. Watching Andy Murray and the England Cricket team prove that there is some genuine home-grown sporting talent. Enjoying a cool beer. There’s a fair chance that most of us took part in at least some of these activities this past weekend.
But not Brian Carlin, Aspire’s Chief Executive. Instead, he was competing at the European Long Distance Triathlon Championships in Spain. Brian was selected for the GB team after a great performance in an Iron Man triathlon earlier in the year and has made full use of the Aspire National Training Centre’s excellent facilities during his training. And while most of us were taking things easy on Saturday, Brian was tackling a 4000 metre swim, 120km bike ride and 30km run. All that training paid off, though, with Brian coming in an impressive 9th in his category. Bring on the World Championships later this year!
Brian celebrated with a glass of champagne later that evening and reflected on his efforts:
“The race really was gruelling. Being up against the best in Europe meant I pulled out all the stops – and now I’m in agony! It was an unbelievable event, though, and I am proud to have been a part of it.”
You don’t have to represent your country to test your mettle – the Aspire Iron Man offers you the chance to prove your fitness and raise money for Aspire at the same time. Challenge your colleagues or coerce them into your team and we’ll see you on the 6th October for race day!
