Brighton House Launch
Last week Aspire formally opened the latest addition to our National Housing Programme, a two bedroom flat in Brighton. The flat is the product of our partnership with The Guinness Trust and will help ease the problems faced by those with spinal injuries who are trying to get home to the South Coast.
The first tenant, Jason, has been living in the flat for a few months and welcomed everyone into his home to show off the accessible features. Local MP Des Turner was particularly impressed with the design of the kitchen.
Aspire research shows that around a quarter of all people who sustain a spinal cord injury will be discharged from hospital to a nursing home because there's nowhere more suitable. Many of those who go home fair no better since they are still waiting on essential adaptations to be made to the property when they move in. The Aspire Housing Programme provides an alternative to these unsuitable housing solutions and we are delighted that this Brighton flat is just part of our ever expanding provision of houses around the UK.
For Jason, the opportunity to live in the Aspire flat has made a world of difference:
As I came up to my discharge, I just didn't have anywhere to go. I'm on my local authority's housing list, but they don't have anything suitable for me at the moment. Living here means I can be independent and get back on with my life while I'm waiting on a permanent home to come up.
