Free sports at Aspire

The Aspire National Training Centre is hosting two fantastic projects this summer to encourage more people to get involved in sport.

The first of these events, the Play Sport London project, took place last week; this is part of the Mayor’s ‘A sporting future for London’ plan which aims to provide free sporting activities to Londoners.  Over the course of the week, 48 people took up a variety of free sporting activities including hockey, badminton and karate. Eight year old Ben, who got to try archery for the first time, really enjoyed his afternoon at Aspire:

“It was a bit like being Robin Hood when I had the bow and arrows which was really good. And I hit the bullseye four times which Graham – who was teaching us – said was very good and made me feel very proud. I can’t wait to have another go.”

Aspire is also part of the London Borough of Harrow Free Swimming for under 16’s scheme.  The scheme gives children resident in Harrow the opportunity to have swimming lessons, kayaking instruction and also come to inflatable fun sessions.  So far there’s been a fantastic response, with 101 children signing up to get involved at Aspire. Excitingly, nearly three quarters of the kids taking part have never been to the Centre before so we’re introducing plenty more families to the friendly and inclusive facilities at Aspire.
