Aspire Swimschool Takes on Channel Challenge

This year's Aspire Channel Swim has seen record numbers of people signing up to take part. And with the money already rolling in, the fundraising team have got smiles on their faces too.

Not wanting to be left out of the fun, the 500 children who take swimming lessons at Aspire were keen to get involved. With the teachers jotting down the lengths (and widths!) swum each lesson, our Swimschool Managers kept a tally of the cumulative distance covered. For the children, having a target proved a great motivator and those of us working at Aspire couldn't help but overhear the excited tales of how far they'd swum that day.

There's still a week's worth of lessons to go but the Swimschool team have more than met their challenge - between them they've done the equivalent of the Channel four times over! And by bringing in their pocket money, and with contributions from parents too, they've also managed to raise almost £200 for Aspire.

For Jess, aged 4, the Challenge has also provided a new way of getting her favourite treats:

Every week our teacher Beth tells us we're getting closer to France and that if we try really hard we'll soon get there. I swam 12 lengths all on my own and asked Mummy for some sweets!

The 2008 Channel Swim is nearly over but it's never too early to start thinking about getting invovled next year. Email swim@aspire.org.uk and we'll be in touch when registrations open in 2009.
