On Tuesday 1st December Aspire held its first Virtual Sports Quiz for our supporters who have missed out on the annual corporate Sports Quiz Dinners in London and Manchester this year.  Both events were postponed until later in 2021 due to the pandemic.  215 people, making up 36 teams, competed to show off their sporting knowledge and to celebrate the last night of England’s second lockdown.

As always, the questions were compiled by BBC 5 Live presenter Rob Nothman and hosted by Aspire’s President John Inverdale.  John welcomed everyone to the quiz by saying, “It’s great to have you with us, wherever you may be.  This event is normally at Lord’s Cricket Ground and has a monumental feelgood factor, with its real celebration of disability sport and of the work Aspire has done over so many years for so many people.  It’s a fantastic organisation.”

After the first half of the quiz John was joined by Clare Balding, who has attended Aspire’s Sports Quiz Dinner in the past, to discuss the sports people she has known who sustained a spinal cord injury, the changes in the Paralympic Games over the last 30 years and “the power of sport to change the world”.

The winning team was the London Associate Development Squad, a collection of the finest sporting minds from the City of London. They each won a coveted signed copy of Clare Balding’s new book, Heroic Animals.  The team was captained by a jubilant Gary Hancock who said “We are regulars at the quiz at Lord’s and were obviously very disappointed when the event had to be postponed. We’re big supporters of Aspire and love the event.  The reason we attend every year is because you hear the stories and realise it could happen to anyone, so we want to support people who sustain those life changing injuries, knowing it could literally be any of us.”

The event raised just under £6,000 which will go towards supporting people with Spinal Cord Injury.
