I was taken to Stanmore hospital after my accident back in 1980 which in those days was not a Spinal Injury Centre.   I missed the football match at Wembley Stadium which I was on my way to see!

Steven in his lightweight wheelchair

In 2000 I started working in the Oswestry Spinal Injury Centre and it was there I heard about Aspire Grants.  My previous wheelchair was very difficult to push and I used to kid myself that using the wheelchair was my rehab.

I applied to Aspire Grants for funding for a lightweight wheelchair.  The process was very helpful to me, as in my situation I sometimes felt the whole world was working against me.  I was ecstatic when I heard I had been successful and wanted to tell a few people as I couldn’t believe it.  I am using my wheelchair to live again... with fewer restrictions.

I am so much more independent.  I feel I have a willingness to do other stuff that I would not have done with the previous wheelchair.  Due to a period on bed rest, which caused my muscle tone to go, this wheelchair feels like ‘gold dust’ as it is very easy to push around and helps to tone up the muscle.
