After having my third child I was looking for a way to get back into the fitness regime - what better way than to run a marathon for the first time! It seemed a natural fit to run for Aspire as they are our Captain's Charity at Porters Park Golf Club where I work.  After visiting the Aspire Leisure Centre and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, it made it all the more real and gave me the drive to see it through.

The Original Marathon appealed to me because of the fantastic route, retracing the steps of all those before me. I had never really run long-distance before and definitely no marathons - this was my first. I did my training on and off from the beginning of the year, however with time constraints of three children and the weather it was difficult.

To start the race so close to Windsor Castle with a group of spectators cheering you away was incredible.  The hosts were superb and the course was laid out meticulously - you really felt the history having the briefing in the Guildhall surrounded by so many wonderful pieces of art.

It was great to finish and complete my first ever marathon (withdrawing was not an option when there were so many kind donations).  I found it a real struggle. The hardest part for me was that we ran an extra 1.3 miles instead of the typical 26.2 for a marathon.  Massive kudos to anyone who has ever completed the feat. Seeing my family at the finish line and crossing the line with my two sons was the highlight!

Aspire and Porters Park have a long-standing relationship, with many past captain's dedicating their year to the charity.  This year Michael Gibson is once again raising money for Aspire, which is a charity very close to home. It's a real privilege to be part of the fundraising team, and running a marathon seems a small feat in comparison to the bravery shown by spinal injured patients every day.

I have raised over £2,000 which is fantastic! It's amazing to have so many generous friends, family, and members of the golf club. I hope it makes a difference.
