Beverley is swimming for wellbeing at the Aspire Leisure Centre I found out about the Aspire Channel Swim from posters at the Aspire Leisure Centre and from people in the pool wearing swimming caps and started on 1st August. My original challenge was for 11 miles but once I finished that I decided to try for 22 miles. Now that I’ve swum 22 miles I have decided to go for as many as I can manage and try to raise more money. When I was younger I used to represent the school and was a fairly good swimmer but as I have been diagnosed with ILD (intestinal lung disease) and Tachycardia arrhythmia it is more difficult as I am breathless and get anaerobic. I love the water - it is, and always has been, my happy place. My reasons for swimming and doing aqua classes is for my wellbeing as I have had a total knee replacement and Aspire has been brilliant for my fitness, health and weight lose thus far. I also love chatting to like-minded people as well as interacting with people and helping them. I have been coming to the Aspire Leisure Centre for two years since my total knee replacement in August 2023. I love the friendliness of their frontline staff and the lifeguards as they get to know you. I also like the different aqua classes on offer and the options for open, slow and medium lane swimming options. I have always wanted to get into going to the gym but haven’t plucked up the courage yet. I did a couple of Mind Body classes but found that the pool is better for me. I don't like asking for sponsorship and usually just donate myself but I'm hoping to raise enough for the towel as this would then be my proof of commitment. I then plan on raffling it to raise further money to support people with spinal cord injuries. I'm asking people to sponsor me via WhatsApp and sending my link to one and all. That way I am not really asking face to face and there’s no pressure; if they donate, great. I can't wait for my medal. I'm like a child, it has motivated me to get a prize for each stage of fundraising! A friend had a diving accident and became paraplegic and I always vowed one day I will be able to say thank you and this was my way as we are cash strapped. My husband fell down a lift shaft in South Africa in 1993 and was hospitalised for over a year and he was born with cerebral palsy so he has always had problems. I'm humbled to have raised £351 so far but hope to reach £400. Many donations have come from new friends I’ve made in the swimming pool at the Aspire Leisure Centre. I'd like to thank everyone at Aspire for their ongoing dedication and especially their belief in me.
