From injury to family outings Before my injury, I was very active. My family spent a lot of time outdoors and one of my hobbies was rock climbing. In 2005, when I was 21, I sustained a spinal cord injury when I fell off a cliff. It was a big thing and had a massive impact. It changed my independence. I had my whole life ahead of me and I became dependent on people. You’re aware of what you’ve lost but I was very glad I was alive. I was aware of how it affected people around me, they wanted to help but nobody really can. I heard about Aspire from the information boards in the Spinal Injury Centre in Middlesbrough. Aspire has given me good advice, helped me financially, and continues to support me and my family. In 2024 I applied to Aspire Grants for a contribution towards a Trail Rider wheelchair attachment, which has increased my independence as I hoped it would. I have more energy because I need less physical exertion to get out and about so I’ve been able to exercise more, such as going swimming. I can join in more family outings and I have more transport options because it’s easier to use public transport. Grants Personal stories How we help Manage Cookie Preferences
