Aspire warmly welcomes this morning’s announcement from the Prime Minister that she plans "to tackle barriers faced by disabled people, whether in employment, housing or elsewhere."

We have long been campaigning for government to take action to increase the supply of accessible housing.  Our recent Freedom of Information inquiry found that in some parts of the country, wheelchair users can expect to wait five times longer for a home that meets their needs than non-wheelchair using households. Which, in many cases, means waiting decades for a suitable home and over a century in at least one area.

That the government now intends on consulting on new measures for all new homes to include more accessibility features, is a very welcome sign that we’ve been heard at long last!

We can only hope that these good intentions are fully embraced by whoever finds themselves in Number 10 next month.
