We know that a number of disabled people were among those who tragically lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017. We are hopeful that the Grenfell public inquiry will reveal what happened to them and whether the necessary steps were taken by those responsible regarding the fire safety of disabled occupants.

It will take a number of years for the Grenfell inquiry to report but, in the meantime, the opportunity must not be lost to ensure that we have the right regulations and guidance in place for the protection and escape of disabled people in general needs residential buildings so that “in planning against future emergencies in residential blocks, or any kind of building, we must ensure disabled people aren’t excluded and don’t get left behind.”
